What Causes Impotence

Smoking Cause Impotence

While impotence becomes more common as men age, growing old is not the cause of the problem. Impotence can be an early warning sign of a more serious illness and if you feel that you get problem with erection, consult your doctored immediately as it may follow other serious health issues one of which is MI or heart attack. Causes of impotence are too many which are categorized as under:


Organic causes of impotence including

  • Coronary Vascular Diseases
  • Atherosclerosis or deposition of fat in arteries
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperlipidemia or increase in cholesterol level in blood
  • Diabetes mellitus, high blood sugar
  • Smoking
  • Trauma to either arteries of penis or surrounding structures

Causes of impotence arising from Central Nervous System including

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Tumours of brain
  • Spinal card disease or injury

Causes of impotence arising from Peripheral Nervous System including

  • Peripheral neuropathy which may be due to dietary deficiency of certain vitamins
  • Alcoholism
  • Uremia or excess of Urea in blood as the urea is a neurotoxin substance
  • Impotence can be a side effect of Pelvic surgery

Causes of impotence due to Hormonal imbalance including

  • Hypogonadism, the condition where the sexual organs are not developed properly
  • Hyper-prolactinaemia: The excess of prolactin hormone in blood. This hormone suppress the level of sex hormone both in males and in females
  • Certain Thyroid disease like hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism
  • Hyper and Hypocortisolism: high and low level of cortisol hormone in blood, respectively.

There are some anatomical causes of impotence including:

  • Peyronie’s disease: Penis bent upward during erection making it impossible to perform intercourse.
  • Micropenis or small penis
  • Other Penile anomalies including hypospadias where the urethra isn’t on it right spot and opens below the shaft of penis.

Certain Drugs

Impotence can be a side effect of certain Drugs including

  • Antihypertensives (beta blockers, diuretics)
  • Antidepressants (tricyclic and SSRIs)
  • Antipsychotics (phenothiazines, risperidone)
  • Anticonvulsants (phenytoin, carbamazepine)
  • Antihistamines
  • H2 antagonists (cimetidine, ranitidine)
  • Recreational drugs (inc tobacco and alcohol)

Psychogenic Causes

  • Situational causes including lack of interest in partner, poor sexual performance,
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Psychosis
